After about an hour and a half of being patient, the Ruff at Big Island Wildlfe Area is presently in sight from the viewing platform on SR95. On my arrival at 2:20PM, there were eight happy birders, including Sally Issaco's group of three. I had just missed what they described as a great showing. They also had to put some effort into their sighting, They had been here this morning with no luck, but returned and found the Ruff. My success was achieved after a trip to Herr Road and returning to wait for the bird to show. It finally came out into the area where they had previously seen it. The location is on the left edge of the eight or nine sedge clumps in a sight line with the dead trees, left of the red and white tower. When the Ruff is in the open it can not be missed. It is presently 4PM and amazingly, I am the only birder here, sharing the parking lot with three fishermen.
