Dear Ohio Birders:
My name is Wendy Rihner, and I am former Clevelander living in New Orleans for the last 25 years. I am also an avid birder.
As of yet, there has been no call for those helping with wildlife. If I hear of anything on my end, I will let this listserv know. A colleague of mine who works as LA's National Audubon's IBA Coordinator is keeping Labirders posted.   Only one telephone # has been given in case anyone finds oiled birds, but I do not know if it refers callers to another #: 1-866-557-1401.
You can also subscribe to LABIRD, as there are many men and women in the know working on this now who are members of LABIRD.
This is a monumental disaster; what Katrina did not take, this will. This is disastrous not only for wildlife (if that were not bad enough), but the seafood industry, which supplies nearly 50% of this
nation's seafood, will be shut down, and many more Americans will be unemployed.
And the fragile coast, already on life support, well. . .you get the idea. And without our coast, many of the birds you like to watch in Ohio will lose vital habitat.
I will do my best to keep anyone updated who wishes to be. Keep us in your thoughts, please. The air quality is awful, and a student of mine had an asthmatic attack.

Here is a link to the unified command response team site, it includes some
answers to questions and a place to submit your questions.  It may help
all of us here wondering about the wildlife we all share and the habitat
that is so important to them.

[Ohio-birds] Disaster
 in the Gulf

Not only doesn't it not sound good it sounds like a wildlife disaster on
unprecedented proportions..  I'm not sure what I can offer to help when
the
oil slick hits but perhaps a check to wildlife recovery efforts.   I would
really really appreciate it if some of the more connected birders let us
(or
me personally) know of opportunities to help.  I have some vacation saved
and would be willing to go down, drive down supplies, man phone lines,
wash
birds, cook for workers, whatever.  But have no idea how to do that.
Though
I think this will be going on for a  long time so opporunities will
continue, if there is any way to find out about them.  Personally I hope
they consider calling out the National Guard to help skim and locate and
wash wildlife.
It may be silly but I do buy Dawn dishwashing liquid just because of their
commercials and promises to help
wildlife.  I hope they're making extra.

Thanks,

Marie Schatz
Michigander in Ohio
