This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for April 7, 2010.  Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Eurasian Wigeon: Su Snyder spied a male along S.R. 95 at Funk Bottoms WA, Wayne Co. 4 Apr, where it remains today (Su Snyder). It could also be scoped from the observation tower, with a scope, per Su.

Surf Scoter: On 22 Mar one remained at Caesar Creek SP, Warren Co. (Rick Asamoto). Another visted Pleasant Hill Lake marina, Ashland/Richland Co. 24 Mar (Greg Miller, Su Snyder), and it stuck around through 28 Mar (Bruce Glick). Russell Reynolds found a close-range pair at Bresler Reservoir, Allen Co. 30 Mar.

Black Scoter: Caesar Creek SP, Warren Co. is a magnet for unusual waterbirds this time of year, including a female Black 25 Mar (Jay Lehman).

Long-tailed Duck: A wave of ‘squaws,’ of a magnitude pretty much unknown to Buckeye birders swept the eastern part of the state last week. All reports:
22 Mar, 2 @ Hoover Reservoir, Franklin Co. (Thomas Slemmer)
22 Mar, 12 @ Pleasant Hill Lake, Ashland/Richland Co. (Gary Cowell fide Bruce Glick)
22 Mar, 6 @ Indigo Lake - CVNP, Summit Co. (Mary Anne Romito)
22 Mar, 3 @ Prairie Lane, Wayne Co. (Su Snyder)
22 Mar, 14 @ Evans Lake & 12 @ Pine Lake, Mahoning Co. (Craig Holt)
22 Mar, 4 @ Lake Medina, Medina Co. (Steve Borgis)
23 Mar, 30 @ Berlin Reservoir, Mahoning/Portage Co; 24 Mar, 10; 25 Mar, 14; 26 Mar, 9; 27-28 Mar, 3 (all Bob & Denise Lane)
23 Mar, 6 @ Guilford Lake, Columbiana Co. (Bob & Denise Lane)
23 Mar, 18 @ Walborn Reservoir, Portage Co. (fide Bob & Denise Lane)
24 Mar, 12 on Lake Erie aerial survey (John Pogacnik)
25-26 Mar, 4 @ Lake Milton, Mahoning Co. (Aaron Bartley, Craig Holt); 27 Mar, 3 (Jay Lehman)
26 Mar, 4 @ Mosquito Lake, Trumbull Co. (John Petruzzi); 17 Mar, 10 (Paula Lozano, et al)
27 Mar, 6 @ Oberlin Reservoir, Lorain Co. (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy); 28-30 Mar, 3 (Chris Pierce, Vic & Terry Macha); 1 Apr, 2 (Patty McKelvey)

Red-throated Loon: The only reported this spring was at Pleasant Hill Lake, Ashland/Richland Co. 28 Mar (Bruce Glick).

Eared Grebe: Andrew Core immaculately described a bird from Caesar Creek SP, Warren Co. 23 Mar (fide Rick Asamoto).

American Bittern: The first of the year was one vocalizing at Metzger Marsh WA, Lucas Co. 3 Apr (Brian Zwiebel).

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron: Coinciding with the arrival of balmy spring weather were two adults at the nest-site high over Preston Rd. in Columbus, Franklin Co. (Bill Whan) 31 Mar. By 4 Apr, two pairs had returned (Bill Whan).

Black Vulture: A migrant passed Edgewater SP, Cuyahoga Co. in the midst of 1275 Turkey Vultures (Emil Bacik). Doug Vogus observed four kettling over Merriman Valley, Summit Co. 1 Apr.

Northern Goshawk: An adult was reportedly encountered among a small raptor flight during the Ottawa NWR census 4 Apr (Jack & Janet Volker, fide Doug Vogus).

Golden Eagle: Yet another was reported west of Baltic, Tuscarawas Co. on 2 Apr (fide Bobolink-Area RBA).

Merlin: One of the Caesar Creek SP “winterees” remained for Paul Dubuc 29 Mar. Conversely, Lou Gardella reported only one at Calvary Cemetery, Cuyahoga Co. 23 Mar, and zero on 30 Mar. Charlie Bombaci encountered a hunting migrant at Blendon Woods MP, Frankin Co. 1 Apr. Three passed Conneaut’s Malek Park 1 Apr (Emil Bacik, Robert Hershberger, Gabe Leidy, Greg Miller). Bill Zimmerman reports that one continues to inhabit Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hamilton Co. as of 7 Apr.

Little Gull: An adult passing North Perry, Lake Co. 2 Apr (John Pogacnik) was the reported in some time.

Iceland Gull: A second-cycle was still hanging off Kelley’s Island 19 Mar for the monthly census (Tom Bartlett).

Lesser Black-backed Gull: This species is taking the eastern US by storm; some nice counts emerged from the interior of the state in recent weeks: up to five at Delaware WA 24 Mar (Sean Williams), two at Oberlin Reservoir, Lorain Co. 27 Mar (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy), three at Findlay Reservoir #2, Hancock Co. 27 Mar (Bill Whan), and a whopping six adults 28 Mar in farm fields along Bandy Rd. near Alliance, Stark Co., where only two had been present on 25-26 Mar (Shari Jackson, Bob & Denise Lane, Ron Macko, Kent Miller, Ben Morrison).

Great Black-backed Gull: A fine bird inland was a first-cycle at Delaware WA 24 Mar (Sean Williams).

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: Tom Kemp spied a EUCO-type dove 29 Mar in Wood Co. He did mention that the bird was a bit on the “light side,” so perhaps Ringed Turtle-Dove or hybrid are other possibilities. To look for this bird: “Specifically, it was seen along Mermill Rd. about 2 miles west of Rte. 25; the address was 15371 Mermill. To reach this site, take Rte. 25 south from BG to Mermill Rd. and turn west.”

Warbling Vireo: Days of prolonged south winds brought with them a few unexpecteds, including an early WAVI 5 Apr in Darke Co. (Regina Schieltz).

COMMON RAVEN: An intriguing report from an experienced observer emerged from Greene Co. 5 Apr (Paul Dubuc). Paul was standing at the gravel pit on Roxanna-New Burlington Rd. and the bird passed heading north, along the Little Miami River.

Red-breasted Nuthatch: Inga Schmidt observed cavity excavation from these Code 3 breeders at Highland Park Cemetery, Cuyahoga Co.

Cape May Warbler: On 2 Apr, Jim Fry reported that the Hocking Co. bird survived the rigors of an Ohio winter.

Palm Warbler: An early Palm was recorded on the Ottawa NWR census 4 Apr (fide Doug Vogus).
American Redstart: A singing male in Athens Co. 3 Apr was a bit ahead of schedule (Dan Weber). Han Clebsch, et al heard a potential redstart at Headlands Beach SP, Lake Co. 3 Apr.

Scarlet Tanager: Reported from The Bobolink-Area by 5 Apr - no specific details given (Bobolink-Area RBA).

Baltimore Oriole: Same as above; multiple overflights were reported from The Bobolink-Area by late Mar/early Apr. Absurdly early.

Yellow-headed Blackbird: A male was a feeder visitor, not surprisingly, near Ottawa NWR 24 Mar (Scott Hites).
