Greetings from the Black Swamp,

We knew today would be great for birding when Micki came in after her early morning walk with 13 species of warblers, including a Mourning Warbler in our backyard.

Luckily, we had planned to meet Scott Myers at the Black Swamp Nature Center at 10:00. In the space of about two hours, Scott, Micki and I were surrounded by warblers, warblers and more warblers. We ended up with 23 species for those two hours, including Orange-crowned, Hooded, Canada (2), and Mourning (3!). We also saw pretty good numbers of the more common warbler species, many of which were actually visible for the first time this year. This number is actually our highest warbler count in Paulding County for a single location and ties our all-time high for a single day.

An additional highlight was a very co-operative Black-billed Cuckoo, who sat in a tree and called and called for us. Nice bird, and one we don't see every year in our county.

The Black Swamp Nature Center might not be as "hot" a spot as Magee, but then we didn't have to fight the crowds, either! :-)

Bird long and prosper,
Doug & Micki Dunakin
Antwerp, O.
