This is almost anti-climatic with all the great birding in northern Ohio
this past weekend. The 13th May monthly census on Kelleys Island was
conducted on Friday, May 15. Paula, Bartlett, John Lortz, and myself
attempted to conduct the census but were interrupted. We started at 0630
but at 9:30 I was called by the banding station that they were over-loaded.
Nets were shut down and Paula drove John out to help. John soon called and
I stopped the census at 1000 near the KI school. After an hour and half,
the banders were caught up, net raised again, and we finished the census.
It was a record census. In fact the record had been broken by 1000. We
recorded 108 species and 3618 individuals. The 13 year average is 89
species and 2868 individuals. Osprey and Prothonotary Warbler were added to
the May species list which stands at 156 species over the last 13 years. We
had 26 species of warbler on this census. Two additional warbler species
were observed by others, making 28 species of warbler observed on the island
on this day. Unfortunately, the Kirtland's Warbler I had schedule for the
island missed and landed on the beach at Magee Marsh... ;>)
