Hello Everyone,



A very kind gentleman walked into Black Swamp Bird Observatory this morning
and calmly announced that he had an injured Purple Gallinule in a box. I'll
admit that I was a bit skeptical as I looked into the box, but when I did (I
won't tell you exactly what I said) but, it was indeed a PURPLE
GALLINULE!!!!! I'll post photos of this gorgeous bird on the BSBO facebook
page at www.facebook.com/bsbobird



The bird was found in a private marsh area about 5 miles east of BSBO
headquarters. It appears to have struck something and, other than acting as
if it is a bit confused, seems alert and in tact. We called Mona Rutger and
the bird is on its way to Back to the Wild, a wildlife rehab in Castalia,
Ohio.  Hopefully it will regain its senses and can be released soon.



On a songbird migration note...

It appears that we've had a significant influx of birds overnight.  I had a
report for the Observatory's songbird banding station that they had more
than 20 species of warblers and were only half way through the daily point
counts.  The boardwalk at Magee Marsh is great today - not big numbers of
anything - but great diversity.
