I showed up at Ivan Miller's house this morning around 8:30am and the bird had not been seen. Bill Whan and I walked the fields bordering the creek bottom on the East and South of the property with no luck. I finally left at a little after 11:00am. No one there has seen the bird yet. Folks were there from Youngstown, Columbus and Michigan as well as a few local Bobolink Area birders.

How the bird was found is quite an interesting tale. Yesterday at 12:15pm Michael Miller (Ivan Miller's 11-yr-old son) spotted a bright red and black bird on the fence near the garden on the Southeast corner of the lot. He watched it for several minutes before running into the house to get binoculars and to tell his father. Yes, young Michael had identified the bird without binoculars. Of course, when he announced to his father that he had seen a Vermilion Flycatcher you can imagine Ivan's initial disbelief and trying to think of common possibilities (like Scarlet Tanager). But they both got great looks through both binoculars and scope and started notifying birders. Congratulations are in order for young Michael Miller and his sharp eye to detail! And many thanks to Ivan Miller for opening his property to allow birders to come and witness this beautiful little gem from the American Southwest.
