Bill is right about Mosquito Lake's Prothonotaries. After doing point counts
and more formal Breeding Bird Censuses there over the years I would estimate
there are well over 100 pairs nesting annually. In the southern two thirds
of the lake the territories are arranged in a single row along the shoreline
but at the north end the territories extend farther inland 2 or 3 deep. 100%
of the nests are in natural cavities. They are easy to view from Bazetta
Road in Mosquito WA.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Prothonotaries and eBird

Re Vic Fazio's interesting post, I was wondering when eBird would collect
sufficient data to reflect real time in the bird world. It's looks like this
amazing tool is there or very close. And with recent improvements in the
entry system, it's even easier and faster to use.

Local Trumbull County birders are certainly aware of this, but for people
traveling though -- the small bays on Mosquito Creek Lake are loaded with
very vocal, breeding prothonotary warblers. I watched them feeding nestlings
in holes in the snags hanging out over the water. I paddled a kayak to find
them; the forest around much of the lake is almost inaccessible from land
and very dense, and the mosquitoes will draw a pint of blood per hour.
Mosquito Lake is just off State Rt. 11 and shows up clearly on any map.
