Hi,
I saw a butterfly today I could not ID. It was in a flooded field near CVNP.
It was about the size of a comma or maybe a hair larger and a little darker
brown than a wood nymph. It flew with a bouncing, jittery flight and
perched with wings closed over its back.
the undersides had one or two ocellae per wing, I am embarrassed to say
after looking at several field guides I do not recall now if there were one
or two- I think two per wing. . the ocellae were large maybe 5 mm diameter-
they were back, with a slight halo around them, and a white center.
The topwings had what looked like a single ocella on the forewing, and
completely uniform brown hindwings.
Buckeye- no
wood satyr- no
pearly crescent- no
common wood-nymph- no
appalachian bronw - no.
any hints appreciated.
thanks
BIll
