This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for May 13, 2010.  Compiler: Gabe Leidy. Email: [log in to unmask]

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php

Ring-necked Duck: The pair in northern Athens Co. remained just long enough to be counted for the summer cycle 1 June, before turtle-trappers chased them elsewhere the following day (Greg Crippen).

BROWN PELICAN: A second-hand report surfaced 1 June of a bird “on the lake this morning at 10:30 heading towards Magee” (Greg Wagener fide Joe Schoelein).

Cattle Egret: A bird foraged at Fernald Preserve, Hamilton Co. 28 May (Frank Frick).

Merlin: Certainly intriguing this week were separate reports of a male along Sager Rd. between Wilkins and Girdham Rds, within the Oak Openings (Matt Anderson, Rick Nirschl).

White-rumped Sandpiper: Two were in the “bean field” at Armleder Park, Hamilton Co. 2 June (James Lundberg).

Red-necked Phalarope: Russell Reynolds discovered, then documented, a ravishing pair at St. Mary’s Fish Hatchery, Auglaize Co. 30 May.

Lesser Black-backed Gull: Craig Holt reported a first-summer on the beach at Conneaut 2 June - seemingly becoming an annual thing.

Black Tern: Three latish Black Terns were found at Winton Woods settling pond, Hamilton Co. 1 Jun (Frank Frick, Ruhikant Meetei).

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: John Pogacnik exquisitively photographed a feeder visitor 29 May in North Perry, Lake Co. One was hanging around the grain elevator off Market St. in Celina, Mercer Co. 30 May (Russell Reynolds).

Red-breasted Nuthatch: Cole DiFabio continues to host a male at her feeders in Madison, Lake Co. through 1 June, usually indicative of nesting nearby.

Winter Wren: Two singing males were present at the Ledges - CVNP, Summit Co. 30 May (Emil Bacik, Gabe Leidy).

Sedge Wren: Lake La Su An WA, Williams Co. hosted one 31 May, at the “parking area on west side of 8 Road south of S Road” (Karl Overman, et al).

Prairie Warbler: Two birds have been recently sighted in the Oak Openings, and seekers should be on the lookout for mates and/or nesting behavior. One has been singing at the dunes area on Girdham Rd., and the other on Reed Rd. just west of Girdham (Matt Anderson, Karl Overman, et al).

Lark Sparrow: The Oak Openings population rewarded Karl Overman, et al with three at Girdham and Reed, and another bird along Jeffers Rd. 31 May.

White-throated Sparrow: Sheryl Young heard one in song 29 May in Sandusky, Erie Co.

Dark-eyed Junco: Out of breeding range was a late junco along Sheryl Young’s driveway in Sandusky, Erie Co. 31 May.

Blue Grosbeak: A male was found 30-31 May in the Oak Openings - on Jeffers Rd. across from the horse riding center (Matt Anderson, Karl Overman, et al).
