A family of Sandhill Cranes, including two juveniles which are presently about half the size of mom and dad, have been confirmed in northwestern Columbiana County. At this same location three years ago, we had two adults. The local residents agree that this was also about the same time they first saw these loud and noisy birds they could not identify. Last year they report there was one juvenile being seen. This year the two juveniles are present almost daily. This is signifigant in that this is the first ever documented nesting of Sandhill Cranes in Columbiana County! The County Wildlife Officer confirmed the Sandhills presence, and the Ohio Division of Wildlife has documented them. The negative for birders is, that the Sandhills nested and now move around to feed, on at least four different private properties. The owners have requested the location not be made public. We will honor their wishes!
