There are a few sites I regularly bird in the NE which have small but stable red-headed woodpecker populations.  Close to home here in NE Mahoning Co., the best place is the Bedford Trails golf course in Coitsville Twp.  There's a large woodland adjacent to the park-like course, but no snags in standing water that I know of.  In Poland Twp., a reliable area is around Yeo Farms which is a well-drained agricultural/wooded area.  There is a pair or two at the mitigation wetland at Orwell in Ashtabula Co., which has lots of dead snags in standing water.  In Conneaut, I have often found red-headeds in the large trees and even poles right in the suburban part of town.  So they do utilize different habitats as long as nest sites and food are available.  As for the current state of shorebird habitat in our state, too bad the heavy rains inundated the diked impoundments in the NW.  However, at Conneaut harbor now the more water the better as that
increases the amount of good feeding habitat on the spit.  If it storms tonight and it rains in the morning, there should be more shorebirds and less people there Sunday morning.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
