Hey Judy,

The wagtails are almost entirely Eurasian in distribution, so you're probably correct in assuming you saw something less exotic. Exactly what is difficult to say without more information. I've never seen a pied wagtail and I'm away from my library, so I'm relying on the internet for my knowledge of what they look like.

Our Eastern Kingbird is about the same size, has a longish tail, and is black and white. It lacks the bold facial markings of the pied wagtail.

When I saw the first picture of a pied wagtail that Google popped up, the black bib and white cheek made me think "Carolina Chickadee." However, you probably wouldn't describe that as "an unusual bird", and your husband would have probably recognized it as a tit. They're much smaller as well.

Apparently wagtails are gray in some plumages, so if your husband was thinking of that, perhaps it was a Northern Mockingbird. They're long-tailed and about the same size.

If these shots-in-the-dark are no help, post again with whatever other information you have about the bird's appearance, habitat, and behavior. Also, it would help to know where you're from, so we have a better idea of what you might consider unusual.
