I just received word from Mark Shieldcastle that while scouting for tomorrow's Hike The Dikes he spotted a Little Blue Heron on Refuge Unit 8a. The bird was with a group of 33 Snowy Egrets. When I heard crows mobbing something in the backyard, I suspected they had found the Cooper's hawk we've seen a few times in the last two weeks. However, with my binoculars, I spotted their quarry, a great horned owl. Before I could get my scope set-up, the owl and crows moved into a tree behind the neighbor's garage. Next, I heard loud beak snapping and, finally, they flew NNE out of sight and sound. The last time a great horned owl was seen in our yard was on St. Patrick's Day in the 1980's.
