After Gabe and Emil left, an additional 4 Red-necked Phalaropes flew in,
bringing the total to 8. It was pretty cool as six of them
were in one group. Also, a second Baird's came in and provided some
excellent plumage comparison's to the first bird ( it was paler overall).
Throw in a lot of shorebird diversity, a hunting Peregrine, and a Little
Blue Heron, to name a few, and Pipe Creek rocked.

The ONWR Auto Tour was very low key. The only decent visible shorebird
habitat was on the north side of the bridge at Crane Creek.
A grand total of 3 shorebird species was seen there.
It is unfortunate that for the last few years, shorebird habitat has
been pretty non-existent along the auto tour routes.

See you on the trails,

Greetings -

Gabe Leidy reports 17 species of shorebirds, right now (11 a.m. Saturday), at Pipe Creek Wildlife Area. Highlights include FOUR Red-necked Phalaropes, a single Willet, and a single Baird's Sandpiper...

Gabe will post his end-of-day results later, I'm sure.

cheers
Jen
