The shorebirding at Conneaut harbor was extraordinary yesterday 8/4.  I arrived at 6:30 AM, stayed until 1:30 PM, left for a few hours, and returned from 4:30 until 9:00 PM.  There were shorebirds around all day, there was movement throughout the day, and no two hours were the same.  For the first time this season, dozens of shorebirds were feeding heavily in the muddy pool at the end of the spit.  The northern shore of the spit was relatively people-free until lunchtime.  Birding highlights: double-crested cormorant, 2 juv. black-crowned night-herons, green heron, 11 bald eagles, imm. Cooper's hawk (launched a couple clumsy attacks), Am. kestrel, 3 black-bellied plovers, 13 semipalmated plovers, 12 killdeers, 8 AM. AVOCETS (7 adults, 1 juv. arrived around 7:30 AM and left around 11:00 AM), 2 spotted sandpipers, solitary sandpiper, 4 lesser yellowlegs, a flock of 9 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and 1 MARBLED GODWIT (came in at 4:35 PM, circled the harbor fairly
low for a few minutes, then flew off to the east), 5 semipalmated sandpipers, 40 least sandpipers, a rare adult BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (all day), pectoral sandpiper, Caspian terns, Forster's tern, belted kingfisher, e. kingbirds, purple martins, bank swallows, and yellow warblers.  In the evening I also saw my first-ever beaver there in the lagoon area.  A bat at 9:00 PM ended a great day of wildlife observation!!  Craig Holt, Lowellville
