Hey all -

Improved shorebird numbers at these refuges, especially in the peep department.
There is good habitat at Pickerel both at the orchid field marsh and at Unit 17,
which is drawn way down.  Access to #17 is obtained by heading east from the
parking lot on TR 280, and heading north on one of the bushwhacked trails
through the cattails (just west of the first cross-trail).  While nothing
unusual was noted, Pick counts for Semipalmated (223) and Pectoral Sandpipers
(101) were nice, and four Stilts were present.  I have posted a fun photo quiz,
which comes from the orchid field (Pearson Rd.) pond at Pickerel at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/28939750@N05/?saved=1  Replace at the word 'at'
with the symbol, of course, if unworking.

Other highlights for the day included a HERMIT THRUSH at Pipe Creek W.A., which
I pished in and watched feed on the gravel walkway for several minutes.  There
is a also a photo posted at the above address, and though my impression was a
worn Hermit Thrush, I welcome comments that suggest a more easterly
counterpart.  There was also a Northern Waterthrush at Pipe and 16 Snowy Egrets.

And, Emil Bacik was, of course, present throughout.

Good birding -
Gabe Leidy
