Got your attention, eh? But this is just a reminder that this species is
showing up all over the region, with recent sightings beyond its
far-south range to Tennessee, Arkansas, Virginia, Oklahoma, but also to
Michigan, New York, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. Some
of these birds HAD to pass through Ohio, and others could have remained
to sample the local hospitality, or will pass through on their way back
south with cooler temperatures. There is only one Ohio record of BBW
Duck, seen by two non-birders near Cincinnati who didn't know what it
was, and happened to photograph it. They can show up anywhere in
wetlands (even in little ponds in subdivisions, or perched in trees
nearby) so keep an eye out for them, and if you see any, try to get
photographs or good long looks you can use to write complete
descriptions. Not a tough ID.
Good luck,
Bill Whan
