Here is an update of the events that took place today with the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck at the Pipe Creek Wildlife Area. At 5:45 PM this afternoon, the celebrity visitor finally returned to the previously described island area, 7 hours and 45 minutes after the 10 AM morning departure. After arriving at 10:15 AM this morning, we walked out to the bird site to be told that we were about fifteen minutes late. The BBWD had taken off to the southeast with a group of Mallards at 10 AM. By now, about thirty disappointed birders were here! All was not lost! Shorebirds were everywhere! By the end of our stay, we had recorded 13 species of shorebirds, and a total of 45 species of birds. Shorebird highlights were Willet-5, Red-necked Phalarope-1, Stilt SAndpiper-2, Black-bellied PLover-1, Wilson's Snipe-1, Short-billed Dowitcher-20+, Semipalmated Plover-10+, Solitary Sandpiper-1, Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Yellowlegs, and Killdeer. The day flew by visiting with birding friends, checking out all the butterflies, especially the numerous Common Buckeyes and Monarchs, and enjoying the floral display of Swamp Rose-mallow, Purple Loosestrife, and Yellow Lotus Water-lily. At 5:45 PM, Dana Bollin and a group of Amish birders, spotted our elusive celebrity fly in on the southwest end of the island. A viewing frenzy followed. Of the morning birders, only us, and Jay Lehman remained! We devoted seven and a half hours waiting for this bird, and it was worth it! By the time we left Pipe Creek, we had been here for about 9 hours. As the saying goes, my how time flies when you are having fun. What a rewarding day!
