I spent a few hours birding along the Scioto River and neighboring quarries & ponds that extend between Marble Cliff and Griggs dam this morning. These spots, which include the Marble Cliff bikepath, Hidden lakes, Shrum Mound quarry, and the Griggs dam area, can be a good bottleneck for birds migrating down the Scioto River valley. Highlights included:

Waterfowl - aside from the expected geese & mallards, there were cormorants at Shrum Mound quarry (where they've nested recently) and in Griggs reservoir.

Herons - Great Egrets were at Shrum Mound quarry (where they've nested) and Griggs dam, while a Black-cr.Night Heron was below Griggs dam.

Swifts & Swallows - Chimney swifts were at many locations, since numbers have increased all around Columbus in the past 2 weeks. The only swallows seen were Barn, also at several locations.

Flycatchers - a mini-flock of 5-6 E.Kingbirds were working their way south below Griggs dam.

Thrushes - Robins were in numbers at many stops; the only other thrush was a Wood Thrush calling at Sullivant Trace.

Warblers - hardly any, save for a Yellow-throated at Shrum Mound.

Baltimore Orioles - another good day, with 10 birds (7 males) scattered between the Marble Cliff bikepath and the riparian area below Griggs dam.
