Reporting dark-eyed juncos from Lake County in August is not that uncommon.
In fact, here in Lake County you can easily find them 365 days of the year.
What I thought was unusual was finding a flock of at least 32 of them
together in August. This time of year you typically get singles or family
groups. Girdled Road Reservation is in Concord Township, the birds were at
the north parking area off Girdled Road. The birds were feeding along the
start of the trail. I counted 32, but there may have been a few more in the
brush off the trail. I think what may have attracted them here is they just
mowed the edge of the trail and they appeared to be picking the seed that
had been strewn on the trail. It is by far the largest summer flock I have
seen around here.
