Hello all,
At least 14 sets of eyes and ears converged on Sheldon Marsh this morning
in an effort to re-locate the Black-backed Woodpecker reported to this
list-serve yesterday, but which was observed/found the day before. If
birders looked for this bird yesterday, there were no posts here, positive or
negative. After several hours of searching today, the bird was not re-located as
of about 12:30 PM. Of course, that doesn't mean that the bird is still not in
the area, so continued searches are recommended. As you may know, this is a very
rare vagrant to Ohio with just a few earlier records; but all of them at this
time of the year. There were a fair numbers of migrants seen in this area, as
well as along the entrance pathway to Pipe Creek WA where Unit C no longer has
good shorebird habitat due to the flooding of the area, presumably for the
up-coming duck season which begins on October 16th. Some decent "edge" shorebird
habitat remains in Unit B only, located in the NW corner of this wildlife area.

There is also some excellent shorebird habitat along the Old Cedar Point
Road (aka the Chausee), but not many shorebirds were seen at about 1:00 PM.
Highlights found here today include a Marbled Godwit and a Western Sandpiper. In
the past, the habitat on either side of this causeway has been very good for Red
Phalarope, starting about October 1st. Please observe the No Parking signs along
the causeway and park at the pull-off on the East side of the roadway,
located just past the S end of the causeway. From here, walk back 150 or so
yards to the North, where the water/mudflats area can be seen. A scope is
recommended. Best of luck, and please report your sightings to Ohio Birds.

More later,
Dan
