On a tour of the Guilford Lake Area in Columbiana County this morning, from 8AM to 11:30AM, 48 species of birds were recorded. Highlights were the previously described Red-necked Grebe, now present for at least eight days, at Guilford Lake; and 12 first of the season Tundra Swans at nearby Salem Reservoir. Other birds of interest were: Mute Swan, Wood Duck, Gadwall, American Black Duck, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Ruddy Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, American Coot, and Double-crested Cormorant. Barn Owl feathers were found at a traditional barn site. The Red-necked Grebe is normally easy to see from the parking lot at Mark's Landing Restaurant. A visit inside the restaurant reveals the history of Guilford Lake and its constuction in 1836 as a reservoir for the Sandy and Beaver Canal.
