Hey Ohio Birders,
Next weekend, October 8-10 is the OOS Annual Conference in Eastlake
(Cleveland vicinity). Hoping the great birds seen this weekend (SABINE'S
GULL, LITTLE GULL, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, RED PHARALOPE, HUDSONIAN GODWIT,
NELSON’S SPARROW) stick around a while so folks not fortunate enough to live
near Lake Erie get a chance next weekend.
Mr. Opposable Chums (a.k.a. Jason Kessler, from the movie "Opposable Chums:
Guts & Glory at the World Series of Birding") gave our conference, and OHIO,
a great endorsement on Jim McCormac's blog (Ohio Birds & Biodiversity): "I
made my first trip to Ohio two years ago for The Midwest Birding Symposium,
and it was a real eye-opener. There's some amazing birding there, in a place
that was just not on my map. And I was privileged to meet a lot of wonderful
folk, including one (1) Mr. James McCormac. Jim, along with Bill Thompson
III, and Kenn & Kim Kaufman, have been working hard to put Ohio in the
forefront of us birdbrains, and I got to see why first hand. ALWAYS worth a
trip, and with the line-up promised for the OOS's annual conference, a no-
brainer for anyone who can make it."
The “line-up” of speakers includes Larry Rosche on the “Birds of Cleveland”
on Friday night and a slate of speakers on Saturday afternoon (John
Pogacnik-Sparrows, Harvey Webster- Smart Light Safe Flight, Dr. Andy Jones-
Bird Migration).
Our special guest is DREW WHEELAN, ABA GULF COAST CONSERVATION COORDINATOR,
keynote speaker on Saturday night. Drew will speak about his four months in
the Gulf Coast area monitoring the effects of the spill on shoreline
ecosystems and the clean-up response effort that went awry. He will share
with you what his expectations were going into the assignment, what the
reality of the situation is, and discuss where we go from here. You will
hear the fascinating story of Drew's saga that began in a truck and ended
with the kindness of strangers opening their homes to him. He will tell you
about his frequent run-ins with the law and how he kept his head through it
all. If you want to join us for just Saturday night, and your time or
finances are limited, you can attend the Saturday keynote address. But
please register in advance:

Also, October is “National Go On a Field Trip Month” and we’re heading to
Conneaut Harbor, Dike 14, and Headlands Beach State Park/Wake Robin Trail on
both SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. SUNDAY ONLY: we’ll also visit Wildwood and Villa
Angela/Cleveland Lakefront State Park with the good folks from Western
Cuyahoga Audubon Society. Plus a Lake Erie Pelagic option on both days!
