From 5PM to 6PM today, on our way home from Conneaut, we visited and scoped Mosquito Lake. The Hudsonian Godwit found and reported by Craig Holt on October 5th, was still present, and only about 150 feet from the road. Tim and Laura Dornan were there when we arrived, excited with finding this new Life Bird; they had also made the 45 minute trek from Conneaut to here on thier way home. Another highlight for all of us, was a flock of 80+ Rusty Blackbirds foraging right in front of us on the mudflat. Shorebirds included numerous Yellowlegs, some Dunlin, and one lone Pectoral Sandpiper. Waterfowl in large groups were constantly on the move being annoyed by an adult pair of Bald Eagles. Abundant species were Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, and American Wigeon. On our departure a gorgeous rainbow was in the eastern sky creating a beautiful background for the Godwit and the Yellowlegs. The location is in the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area at the far northwest corner of Mosquito Lake on Hoagland-Blackstub Road and a short distance north of Mahan-Denman Road; you will see the water on the right. Presently this is a great rewarding birding destination. Also check out the east end of Mahan-Denman Road where it dead ends into the lake. Excellent waterfowling at this spot.
