Greetings from the heart of the Black Swamp,

After what seems like many, many moons with no significant sightings, two rarities have landed in Paulding County within the space of just a few days! I was informed yesterday by Paulding birder Scott Myers that a Cattle Egret had been hanging around in the vicinity of a local pond several miles northeast of Paulding. And then today we received a call from Trena Puckett of Haviland (southern Paulding County) that a Brant had been seen for several days just south of the village of Haviland on Road 24. Visits to each of the locations provided confirmation that both birds were present Friday. The Brant is the first sighting that we know of in Paulding County ever, and the Cattle Egret is a very rare visitor as well with only two previous records over the past twenty-five years.

Anyone wishing details as to the locations can contact me or my wife at 419-258-4951 or 419-506-0055. We are going to make a concerted effort to revisit each bird today.

Bird long and prosper!
