Greetings -
As of 2:30 p.m. Monday the 22nd, the juvenile SABINE'S GULL continues at Metzger (see previous reports for directions) fide D.G. The bird is putting on a "show", flying directly overhead, low, and also landing on the beach for incredible views. Sabine's is a rare migrant along the Lake Erie coast. It's getting late in the year for this species to turn up. Most records come from late August - October. The majority of sightings in Ohio are of distant fly-by birds on the lake horizon as they're being pushed by cold fronts. When these young (juvenile/immature) birds turn up at inland lakes/reservoirs or harbors, they can sometimes stick for several days and really be enjoyed brilliantly. This may turn out to be one of those opportunities. (In past years this has happened at Grand Lake St. Mary's, and Huron Harbor, for instance). Hopefully you'll be inspired to attempt to see this bird. Their plumage is absolutely stunning. As far as the question of "how long will it stick around?" Very difficult to say. Some are one-day wonders and others will stick to one general area (if weather/food/little disturbance provides) for several days to a week or so before heading onward. It's getting late in the season, with unpredictable weather. As it goes with all birds, one never knows. Thanks again to Kenn K. for finding and getting word out.
Good luck Jen
