There are two Great Blue Heron rookeries on the ORINWR property (within about 100 yards of the Ohio border) -- one on Grape Island and one on Fish Creek Island. These rookeries have been monitored since 1992. There appears to be a steady decline in the number of nests -- from 300 in 1992 to 75 today. It looked like the decline has leveled out at about 150 nests from 2001 to 2007 but now that appears to have been temporary situation.

Anyone know of any data for the Great Blue Heron population? Is this decline real? Is this a local phenomenon?

For comparison, the Parkersburg, WV CBC (which includes a piece of Ohio) data for Great Blue Herons shows a steady decline since 2002. Before that the numbers varied quite a bit from year to year with no significant trend.
