Greetings birders -
The adult basic Black-headed Gull was viewed several times by myself and a handful of observers (Richardson, Gesualdo, Taft) early this morning (9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) in Lorain Harbor proper but apparently was not relocated afterwards. There were significantly fewer gulls present in the harbor. The Bonaparte's flock dwindled from 5,000 yesterday to around 1,000 today, due to very calm and pleasant weather today. The Black-headed was working along the west breakwall with a tight foraging line of Bonaparte's Gulls. Scopes were necessary to pick up this bird. Even then, the bright morning light made it more difficult to pick up the underwing flash of Black-headed. But fantastic views were had by all, including study of the deep red bill and red legs/feet.
I've posted a few record photos and details of the bird from yesterday, Saturday, on my blog: http://www.jenbrumfield.com/?page_id=384
A stop at Avon Lake Powerplant/Miller Road Park around noon today turned up at least 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2 adults, 2 first-year birds) and a single first-year THAYER'S GULL. Around 800 gulls were present loafing in the water and on the beach. Great views were had. Red-breasted Mergansers were moving WEST in small flocks on the heat-wave-veiled horizon, and a handful were in the harbor.
