Greetings!
The black-bellied whistling duck was still present this morning at Buckeye Quarry Lake in Bluffton.
I arrived at 8:00 a.m. this morning and had to wait until 10:00 until the bird finally made an appearance. I searched the quarry lake (Buckeye) for 1 1/2 hours (thinking the bird was hidden or had left) and the adjacent larger quarry lake along Lake Street. A handful of mallards, Canada geese, a pied-billed grebe and a female common goldeneye were the only birds present at the larger lake.
I went back for one final look around Buckeye Lake at 10:00 and I soon as I walked down to the lake, the BBWD flew over my head...coming in from the east...flew the entire length of the lake calling all the while and settled-in at the far west end. It took up a spot along the shore preening, bathing, etc. and provided some killer looks at very close range. It initially sat amongst a group pf mallards, but they left to feed and the BBWD was content to rest along the shore all by itself.
I met a few other birders there (Linda and Laurie) and also talked with another Linda (the lady who reported the bird). It seems the bird initially used to come and go quite a bit when it was first found. Seeing as the bird was not present until 10:00 this morning, it made me wonder if the bird spends time feeding in the local agricultural fields or roosting in a nearby groove of trees in the evening. It seems that BBWD's also mainly feed in the evenings, so possibly it leaves the lake at dusk and returns in the morning?
Anyway...fantastic bird! Pacific Loon on Thursday and BBWD on Sunday! Can't ask for a better extended birding "weekend" than that with two new Ohio birds three days apart.
Oh...almost forgot...a very cooperative winter wren put on a nice show in the stream adjacent to the quarry lake.
Good birding,
Jason
