Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) had the pleasure of hosting Jeffrey Gordon, the new President of The American Birding Association, during his cross-country road trip to his new "digs" in Colorado. During his visit, we were graced by a gorgeous Rough-legged Hawk (our first locally of the season) as it passed over the BSBO headquarters. Birders should also be out checking potential spots for Northern Saw-whet Owls. BSBO's research team has banded 147 of these tiny tooters at our site in Petersburg, Michigan -- sixty-two of those were banded in one night!

We'd also like to share the following opportunities for birders:

1) The 4th Annual Ohio Young Birders Club Conference, November 20th
For just $10 per student (18 & under) and $20 per adult, you'll get great presentations by student members of the OYBC, live raptors on display from our partners at Raptor Inc., bird banding presentations, field trips, door prizes, a great lunch, and an excuse to visit the remarkable facilities of this year's conference host, Aullwood Audubon Center & Farm, near Dayton, Ohio. Our keynote speaker is Harold Eyster. The American Birding Association's 2010 Young Birder of the Year, Harold will be presenting: "The Indispensable Field Notebook: The how and why of successful field notes." This epic event is open to everyone and you do not need to be an OYBC member to attend. In fact, we encourage you to bring potential new young birders and give them a chance to interact with people their own age who are really into birds and birding! Please register today and support our youth conservation leaders. I know you'll have a great time, learn a lot, and come away with a renewed sense of hope for the future of birds and birding. http://ohioyoungbirders.org/oybc_4th_annual_conference.htm

2) Lake Erie Pelagic Trip
Our first two trips sold out fast and due to an overwhelming number of requests, we've added a third Lake Erie Pelagic trip on December 11th. If you're interested, I would encourage you to register soon.
Here's a link to the BSBO website for details: http://www.bsbobird.org/lake_erie_pelagic.htm

3) Please, help BSBO ensure that the Winds of Change do not become the Wounds of Change
Anyone who shares our concern about the impacts of wind power when turbines invade the critical migratory bird stopover habitat along the Lakeshore in northwest Ohio, please email me for more information. The issue is exploding right now and we could use all the help we can get.

And, at the risk of sounding like a conservation evangelist, I would ask that all of you take a few minutes today to think about one or two simple ways to reduce your personal consumption of energy.
Also, consider taking someone new birding. The road to becoming a conservationist begins with caring about something. We can all help build support for bird conservation simply by introduing new people to the joys of birds and birding! You've got the power -- use it wisely!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kaufman
