I've been watching the Black-bellied whistling duck at Buckeye Lake (small
quarry) in Bluffton, Ohio the last few days. I've attached a photo of the duck
that I took yesterday.

This afternoon some neighbors mentioned it looked like it was getting weak and
approached them as if begging for food. Is there a rescue group to help it? I
have heard comments from both camps before about helping or not helping wildlife
that we humans are observing. Anyone got suggestions/comments about if the
duck
needs help and if there is a group to help it?

A note about birds supported by the lake--There is now a flock of about
100 mallards residing at the lake and a group of about 10 Canadian geese. Last
winter the lake hosted about 200 mallards and 150 Canadian geese. So they're
starting to come in for the winter.

A note on the quarry lake--There has been a large fish kill (maybe about 50 or
so bodies at the boat ramp end) in the lake in the last week or so. Not typical
for the lake and not sure what has caused it. Now the remaining carp swim at
the surface of the lake with mouths out of the water and open. Looks like
they're gulping for air. I've attached a photo showing 3 carp mouths and the
duck. Someone who fishes the lake suggested that there might have been some
kind of inversion causing there to be a lack of oxygen in the lake. Anyone got
an explanation for the fish kill? Will this have a negative impact on the
ability of the
duck to survive at the quarry lake?

Thanks for your help.

Jean
