West coast update, from East 55th Marina to Lorain Harbor, Friday Dec 17th.
East 55th: gulls decreasing in number since last week, yet several thousand (mostly Ring-billed, Herring, with several dozen Great Black-backeds), and good diversity of waterfowl. Frozen within breakwalls and harbor. Open water east of 55th at East 72nd Street (hotwaters still open). Highlights Glaucous Gull (one first-cycle), Lesser Black-backed Gull (at least 4 adults), Rough-legged Hawk (female on the north breakwall), Peregrine Falcon, 8 spp waterfowl.
Rocky River Park (on Beach Cliff Drive): very large amount of open water, yet only one Common Goldeneye (small flocks of goldeneye passing heading west). A single adult Glaucous Gull on the ice shelf.
Avon Lake Powerplant: large amount of open water but then iced to horizon. Good waterfowl diversity and numbers, with fantastic studies of Common Goldeneye, Redhead, Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, Lesser Scaup. Gulls low in number and sitting far out on ice shelf.
Sheffield Lake Community Park and Boat Launch: good amount of open water then iced to horizon. Several hundred Red-breasted Mergansers, numerous Common Mergansers, abundant Common Goldeneye. An excellent little park for a scan, great clear view of the lakefront.
Lorain Harbor: completely iced over. A single female American Kestrel hovered over grassy patches on the west breakwall.
