Hello birders,

Here are some highlights from Delaware Wildlife Area and the Olentangy
River:

Wood Duck 2, in Olentangy River behind "Case Construction and
Demolition," a business west of Panhandle
American Black Duck 7, up and down the Olentangy
Great Blue Heron 53, 27 just south of the dam, 13 in a field near "Case
Construction and Demolition," and others scattered along the Olentangy
Bald Eagle 1, in tree bordering a field near "Case Construction and
Demolition"
Red-shouldered Hawk 1 juvenile, in a field north of the now-frozen
fishing pond along 229, which is on the north side of the road
Herring Gull 2, sitting on the ice on the reservoir
Short-eared Owl 1, at 5:30pm, a single individual flying over the fields
along Hanover Rd.
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 2, in thickets/woods along the dike between the
dam and Panhandle
Northern Shrike 1, in traditional fields north of Pond 1B, along the
third hedgerow. This was a first year bird, with faint scaling on breast and
a weak mask.
Winter Wren 1, along Olentangy river, at an overlook from the trailer
park along Case Rd.
Hermit Thrush 2, along the dike between the dam and Panhandle, at
opposite ends
American Pipit 3, flyovers along the dike between the dam and Panhandle,
heard well and seen- these are probably the same three birds present last
week, as the open shoreline is a favored habitat
Eastern Towhee 1 female, along Sherwood Rd.
Swamp Sparrow 34, numbers war down from last year, probably because the
marsh is a solid block of ice, whereas last year there were many open
patches
Red-winged Blackbird 29
Rusty Blackbird 3-4, three flyovers along the dike between the dam and
Panhandle, heard first, then seen well, then another later in the day
Common Grackle 134, large flock along Leonardsburg at the end of the
day, containing some of the redwings, all of the cowbirds, and one Rusty
Brown-headed Cowbird 6

Good birding,

Sean
