The traditional roost of black-crowned night-herons along the Olentangy
River on the OSU campus has moved from its former location across the
river from the Drake Union. Or most of it anyway; one adult was still in
the old location, sharing it with two great blue herons. Nine other
adults and four youngsters had moved a few hundred yards south and now
can be found on the other side of the Herrick Drive bridge; it still
makes sense to park at the Union and walk the bike path. There is a big
drain on the east bank that keeps the ice off here. As for where these
birds spend the warm months, the mystery remains...
