The long-tailed duck hung around E.72nd st as late as 2:00 today, moving as far
west as just past the tip of the straight breakwall that runs from the shoreline
out towards the main east-west breakwall (the last structure before E.55th st.)
and as far east as just about the middle of the westernmost section of the main
parking lot at E. 72nd.  Mark Anderson spotted him about noon.  After the first
hour he spent quite a bit of time diving, most times resurfacing near where he'd
submerged, though once we lost him for several minutes and then found him again
a hundred yards to the west.  He never got quite close enough for good photos
(with my equipment)but we had a few good looks when the sun broke through.

Also scaup, canvasback, coots, goldeneye...ice in the water is almost totally
gone.
