On 12/3 and 12/4 I did some lake-hopping in the NE.  The last couple days I've only been able to do some feeder watching.  Nothing really rare was seen, but plenty of cool birds are around.  Ponds mostly frozen, some lakes also starting to ice over.  I drove through a couple hundred miles of rural habitat, but didn't see too many raptors.  Most numerous birds were Am. crows, ring-billed gulls, and Canada geese.  Some highlights........at Summit L. in Akron: 8 gadwalls, 29 n. shovelers, 26 ring-necked ducks, hooded mergansers, 22 ruddy ducks, 7 pied-billed grebes, and 150 Am. coots.........at Springfield L. (also Summit Co.); pied-billed grebes, sharp-shinned hawk, 20 Am. coots, 50 herring gulls.........at Franklin Square bottoms in Columbiana Co: no geese, Cooper's hawk, belted kingfisher.........the rest of the sightings are from Mahoning Co.---at L. Milton: 55 hooded mergansers, 3 pied-billed grebes, 35 Bonaparte's gulls, hairy woodpecker,
Carolina wren, e. bluebird.........Berlin Res. at the Rte. 224 causeway: ruddy duck, 175 Bonaparte's gulls.........Am. kestrel in Jackson Twp........Beaver Twp. around Mill Creek: Am. black duck, 2 bald eagles, red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawks, 2 Am. kestrels, e. bluebird.........Evans L: 31 gadwalls, 5 Am. black ducks, 50 n. shovelers, 3 green-winged teal, hen wood duck, ring-necked ducks, buffleheads, c. goldeneye, 125 hooded mergansers, 14 common mergansers, ruddy ducks, common loon, pied-billed grebe, 30 Am. coots, 2000 ring-billed gulls, 55 herring gulls, belted kingfisher, 2 golden-crowned kinglets, and e. bluebirds.........Pine L: 14 gadwalls, Am. black ducks, n. shovelers, 2 canvasbacks, buffleheads, 110 hooded mergansers, common mergansers, 155 ruddy ducks, pied-billed grebe, 35 herring gulls, 4 e. bluebirds, Am. robin.........Mahoning River at Struthers: 4 hooded mergansers, Am. tree sparrows..........Poland Twp./Lowellville: 3 Cooper's
hawks, sharp-shinned hawk, red-tailed hawks, e. bluebirds, Am. robin, 30 dark-eyed juncos........Coitsville Twp. at and near the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve: imm. n. harrier, great horned owl perched in tree at dusk...........and last but not least, a total of 3000+ Am. crows in Mahoning Co., with 2000+ estimated in the late afternoon flight at Struthers/Coitsville headed towards the night roost in Youngstown (I still don't know where exactly the roost is though).  Craig Holt, Lowellville
