I part of this evening birding from the Grigg's reservoir dam south
along the river through Hoover Park. I thought I'd mention a few
noteworthy birds:
3 "Richardson's" Cackling Geese (B. h. hutchinsii) -- together with
CAGOs, visible from the parking area south of Hoover Park.
1m Gadwall -- below the dam
1m Bufflehead -- north end of Hoover park
1m C. Merganser -- south end of Hoover park
3 Pie-billed Grebes -- south of Hoover park
3 C. Goldeneye (1m 2f) -- south end of Hoover park
1-2 Belted Kingfisher -- north end of Hoover park
There were also 6 or more domestic-type mallards present (2 washed out
female types, 3-4 dark with a white bib, 1-2 all white). There were
flocks of Canadas coming in to roost the entire time I was there, so
this might be a place worth checking for anyone looking for uncommon
geese in Columbus.
Good birding,
Paul Hurtado
