The Swedish birds died right after fireworks, too. They haven't found the cause of death for the 8,000 collared doves in Italy yet. One article speculated that the blue spots on their bills were related to hypoxia - lack of oxygen as a precursor to altitude sickness - as if the birds were swept into a high-altitude wind storm.

I have some old Ohio Conservaton Bulletin magazines from the 30's and 40"
nd I will have to look but i am sure I read articles in there where they
ent in to crow roosts and set off charges and killed them by the hundreds.

an 4 "Audubonmagagine.org" article (fwd from CT listserve --> PA-BIRDS
istserve). Link in forwarded email. Excerpts:
Illegal Fireworks Likely Cause of Massive Arkansas Blackbird Deaths
The loud noises, combined with birds’ poor night vision and large winter
athering... led birds to crash to their deaths. That’s the Arkansas Game
nd Fish Commission's “strong working hypothesis.”
(On New Year's Eve) At 10 p.m., residents heard several extremely loud,
window-shaking” noises that are believed to have come from
rofessional-grade fireworks, which no one had permission to set off. The
lasts came from an area near the birds’ winter roost. ~15 minutes later
everal folks went outside when they heard the whooshing wings of a
lackbird flock flying at its normal fast speed. “But instead of the birds
eing above treetop level, like they usually are, they were at rooftop
evel... They crashed into houses, cars, trees, mailboxes, shrubbery.
verything around.”
Blackbirds don’t usually fly at night. The big booms apparently flushed the
irds from their roost, and then poor eyesight and disorientation stymied
hem from making it back safely. “Necropsy report shows trauma primarily to
he chest... Hemorrhaging in the body cavity, bruised skulls, blood clots
n brain. It’s consistent with crashing into something rather than falling.”
he death toll is difficult to estimate because feral cats, raccoons, and
ther scavengers likely made a meal out of the fallen creatures.
It appears that similarly mysterious bird deaths in Louisiana around the
ame time are unrelated. “Initial findings indicate that these are isolated
ncidents that were probably caused by disturbance and disorientation,” says
reg Butcher, Audubon's director of bird conservation.
