Risk Asamoto and I did some birding in Hamilton County today. We found a
Long-eared and Short-eared Owl at Fernald this afternoon. The
Short-eared Owl was seen from the first observation site after entering
the preserve at about 4:50 PM. Looking to the right there is a series of
small buildings. Between the second and third is a power pole with
cross-beams that the owl landed on several times, the last time enjoying
a meal. Allan Claybon was able to get photos. On the way out I walked
the entry road looking for owls and was able to spot a skittish
Long-eared Owl which Rick and I saw a couple of times as it flew down
the road. It was still in the pines when we left.

We were not able to relocate the Phoebe reported there earlier this
week.

We saw a Turkey Vulture flying over Foley Rd after leaving Old St.
Joseph's Cemetery.

At Spring Grove Cemetery we had 4 Red-breasted Nuthatches and at least 4
Pine siskins. At the Lost Bridge Gravel Pit we had N. Pintail, Mallard,
Redhead, Common Merganser and Bald Eagle.

On the way home I stopped by Twin Creek MP in Warren County and heard an
Eastern Screech Owl.

We had about 50 species for the day.
