Emil Bacik and I visited familiar spots within CVNP this morning. Highlights
included 8 Purple Finches along the Oak Hill entrance road and a male Wood Duck
on the river at Bath Rd. There were 30 Purples in the Oak Hill area on 12/27.
Rough-legged Hawks did not dissappoint at The Wilds, yesterday, for the annual
OOS shebang. Seemed every stop turned up an array of 'Legs," - in a surprising
3:1 dark to light color morph ratio. Our group alone tallied 25 birds, though
harriers were outrageously scarce (2 birds) in contrast. A cooperative Northern
Shrike was viewed along Prouty Rd., after lunch, and a Short-eared Owl heard
barking across from the visitors' center in the early AM.
Last Sat., a fem. Yellow-bellied Spasucker was spied at The Jesuit Retreat Home
in Parma
Last but not least, a wayward Common Loon was viewed over Parma on 1/7...very
strange, this bird headed fairly low over my yard heading southeast in the early
afternoon. Quite late and out-of-place.
Good birding -
