 Hi all,
I had a chance to stop by Melvin Quarry (just east of Wilmington on SR 22) for about an hour today. Nothing new to report (see Bill Whan's report from yesterday) but waterfowl numbers continue to be high. Highlights were 4 Cackling Geese and 18 Snow Geese (10 Blue, 8 White), along with a smattering of other waterfowl. The Cacklers are hard to pick out from the enormous amount of other geese (took me about 40 mins- I think they were hiding behind their "big brothers" at first), but once you find them they stand out- much smaller than even the "lesser" Canadas, with a distinctive bill and head shape. I also noticed the difference in the shape and extent of the white cheek. This quarry certainly offers an interesting comparison of several subspecies of geese. Could not find any G. White-fronted.

Good Birding,

Steve Landes
