Today, early afternoon, I went through Lakeview and noticed something on the
upper pond by Wade Chapel, turned out to be a red-tailed hawk lunching on a
small mammal on the ice in the middle of the pond.  As I slowed down the bird
flew up into a nearby tree and wouldn't return to the ice while I watched.
Hoping to get a better view I eventually went around to the west of the pond and
noticed another hawk in the trees nearby.  According to a cemetery worker I
spoke with, the critter on the ice had been a groundhog that a coyote had killed
earlier this morning...the coyote took off and left the prey on the ice, being
harassed by the maintenance crew, and was eventually shot at and hit.  Prior to
all this it had supposedly been stalking someone walking a dog.  According to
the worker, and another who joined in, there have been several coyotes seen, and
a den with pups is suspected, though I don't know if that was verified.  In any
case, anyone alone on foot or with a pet should be cautious for the foreseeable
future there.  I had encountered a coyote two days ago at very close range
there, though I caught him unaware...in any case do be careful. The last five
photos on this page were taken today.
