I did not see 100 birds in Ohio in January and I am not a member of the Century Club but there is no way I would consider myself a Big Loser. Annie, Kelley and I attended the OOS Wilds event and observed 25 Rough legged Hawks both light and dark morphs topped off with a Northern Shrike that was a great big Wow day. The next day we birded our way up to Lake Erie seeing Horned Larks, Longspurs, and Snow Buntings along the way. Our day ended watching the gulls and waterfowl at 72 Street in Cleveland. The next day we hiked the trail at Mentor Marsh getting fun looks at the Common Redpolls about 50 as they fed in the trees and on the ground. We sat at the metroparks and watch the feeders and all the fun birds that came around. We even took an hour or two and found a few Geocaches in the city of Cleveland. We saw a lot of Northern Harriers hunting over the fields at places like Pickerington Ponds, The Wilds, Killdeer Plains, a Bald Eagle perched here and there.
Yesterday we ended our January birding when we three made the trip to see the Golden-crowned Sparrow, after making a stop in Findlay to find three Geocaches we ended the days birding watching the Harriers roost and the Short-eared Owls take flight at Killdeer Plains. January was a great month to be birding in Ohio and I do congratulate those who are members of the Century Club and acheived the goal of 100 species it is an acommplishment. Still there is no way we were losers as I remember the Wows and Ahs that escaped our mouths during the month of January. How many species we saw we do not know good birding to you all.

Bob, Annie, and Kelley
