I did not have a chance to get out this morning, but I did get out along the
lake this afternoon. Not a lot moving in the afternoon, but a few decent
birds were noted. I scared up an American woodcock in a wet field near the
Painesville-Perry Township line. I also had a couple turkey vultures. I
have single vultures yesterday and Wednesday also. There were a few
red-winged blackbirds around and a few migrating horned larks. A merlin was
seen just east of the dump that lies north of Route 20. This is not far
from where they bred in 2009. No waterfowl this way, the lake is still
ice-covered.

Also of interest was a group of 16 cedar waxwings that contained two larger
birds. Unfortunately they were flying east and they had the sun behind them
so they were silhouettes. To make matters worse the gale-force winds
drowned out their calls. They never slowed down. I have been seeing
scattered waxwing flocks around here over the last couple weeks so keep your
eyes open.
