Charlemont Reservation Lorain Co.
Sun. 20 Feb. 2011
9:00am - 1:30pm
20's/30's, overcast, some breeze.

I found 2 Long-eared Owls in a stand of pine trees on the north side of New London Eastern Road, not visible from the road. The stand of pines is approximately 15 yards wide by 150 yards long, at the south end there is a old sign that reads Black River Audubon Reforestation Project. This wasn't an easy observation, not just walk in and there they are looking down at you. Because the trees are only 20 -25 feet tall, the owls were quite low making them a little uncomfortable with my close presence I guess,as they wouldn't stay put. When I first encountered the long-eareds they were at the south end of the stand but kept moving north down the rows of pines. On my hands and knees, inching along on my back side I was able to get within 20 feet of the owls for a great look and definite I.D.
