The last few days I've been birding along the Mahoning River in both ends of Mahoning Co. and just into Stark Co.  Yesterday 2/3: at the SW end of Berlin Res. (Stark Co.), the river channel is open from Greenbower Rd. to the Rte. 225 bridge and held 500 Canada geese, 3 great blue herons, and ring-billed gulls; north (downstream) of Berlin Res. the river was open from the spillway all the way to the south end of L. Milton and had 700 Canada geese, 23 Am. black ducks, mallards, ring-necked duck, 18 c. goldeneyes (males displaying now), 2 hooded mergansers, and a common merganser; landbirds included Cooper's hawk, red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawks, n. flicker, e. bluebirds, Am. tree sparrows, and white-throated sparrows.  Earlier this week the Struthers-Lowellville stretch of the Mahoning R. has produced 3 ring-necked ducks, 2 buffleheads, 11 c. goldeneyes, 16 hooded mergansers (males of this species also displaying now), 2 ruddy ducks, pied-billed
grebe, and 2 horned grebes.  Landbirds in that area included 33 wild turkeys (2 big adult males in full display-impressive!), e. bluebird, Am. robins, and 3 white-throated sparrows.  Songbirds were feeding on the ground where the turkeys had scratched up the leaf litter.  Around home in Poland Twp. (NE Mahoning Co.), a flock of 25 male red-winged blackbirds showed up yesterday morning, and a white-throated sparrow is a recent new visitor.  Also yesterday, I saw the following while driving: red-shouldered hawks in Austintown (MAHO) and Rootstown Twp. (Portage Co.), Cooper's hawk in Coitsville Twp. (MAHO), 5 red-tailed hawks in Portage Co., and 10 cedar waxwings bathing in a puddle in Brimfield (PORT).  Craig Holt, Lowellville
