I don't know if the recent sno & ice will slow it, but we've had a lot of Red-shouldered Hawks calling in different parts of Gahanna & northeast Columbus over the past week. These are all adult birds and included individuals at Creekside Park, Gahanna Woods, 3 at Rathburn Woods, and 1 at Blendon Woods. Nearly all of these areas are swampy woods or ravines, which seem to be their preferred habitat here. It seems early for long-distance migrants, so these are likely birds that might have wintered in southern Ohio or Kentucky, and now are moving north to prospect for territories. Keep your ears open the next few weeks.
