For about 2 weeks, I have observed American Tree Sparrows attempting to extract food from our backyard upside-down thistle feeder. They flip over and try to balance with one wing extended to the perch below; however, their fat little bellies do not allow this posture and down they slide. These persistent little creatures attempted this eating posture over and over. I suspected they would eventually be successful in finding a way to get at those seeds. Yesterday, several tree sparrows were quickly grabbing thistle seeds from the feeder! The American Goldfinch are chased from the thistle feeder by the Tree Swallows. It will be interesting to see how long this battle continues.
