I looked around quite a bit of Mahoning Co. yesterday.  I also barely got into Columbiana and Stark Counties.  I was mostly searching for waterfowl, and hit these spots: Mahoning R., Struthers--Lowellville, Evans L., Pine L., the Mill Creek area pond in Beaver Twp., Arrowhead L., Berlin Res./WA, and L. Milton.  Beaver Twp. pond and Arrowhead L. were best for ducks, Berlin and L. Milton were better for gulls.  Some good raptors were scattered around.  I had good luck finding songbirds in the early afternoon, activity picked up a lot then.  Species on the increase/first of "spring" were Am. wigeon, green-winged teal, canvasback, redhead, ring-necked duck, ring-billed gull, herring gull, horned lark, song sparrow, swamp sparrow, fox sparrow, and white-throated sparrow.  I saw one each of bald eagle, n. harrier, and Am. kestrel plus a few red-shouldered hawks in addition to red-tails.  Still scarce were great blue herons, robins, and blackbirds.
Again no turkey vultures or killdeer.  The Lowellville great horned owl is still on the nest.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
